Every year in the United States, about 7,000 babies (or 1 out of every 600) are born with a cleft lip and/or a cleft palate. These are two of the most common birth defects found in the US.
Lucas is a 19 year old young man who has been a patient at Bi County for over 4 years now. In OT he has been working really hard on increasing his overall independence. He is able to do all of his basic ADL skills, however had struggled with tying his shoes, which after a long time, he can now do on his own, by himself without modifying the laces! He is presently working on IADL skills such as telling time on a clock as well as identifying coins , their values and adding simple change to get ready for shopping! We are also still addressing his writing skills to increased the legibility and quality as well as following directions to complete functional tasks. He is always happy and cooperative, works hard and tries to please. He has made tremendous progress in the last few months!
Lucas is a very special person. He has a diagnosis of Down Syndrome. He is working on becoming more independent in his daily activities and improving his overall speech production. Lucas enjoys spending time with his family, spending time with his dog -lady, and going to church on the weekends including youth group. He is a very comical person who enjoys making others laugh and you can definitely count on that, even at 9:00 in the morning. He is someone you instantly connect with due to his bold, humorous and outgoing personality. Lucas has made great strides in speech and continues to overcome obstacles. He has enhanced his ability to have a conversation with an appropriate rate of speech, ask reciprocal questions and answer questions appropriately while determining when it is time for work vs play. Lucas is definitely one of a kind and a pleasure to work with!
Lucas likes having a good time wherever he goes!
Lucas is motivated during therapy and ready to work! He makes sure each day that he confirms therapy times and days to be sure he knows what to expect for the following days to come!
Lucas enjoys writing and has made lots of improvement in his writing skills!
Lucas enjoys the different aspects of his therapy as well as the ability to pick the order of the activities that he will work on.
