Down syndrome , also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. It is usually associated with physical growth delays, mild to moderate intellectual disability, and characteristic facial features.
Hailey is a 23 year old woman with Downs Syndrome. She is a friendly person with a lot of motivation. Her typical week includes attending Schott Community, a neighborhood adult day training program Monday to Friday. She participates in a special needs Tap program, Heartbeat Tap, for 1 hour a week. She has even participated in a show for the community through her tap performances a few times!
Through therapy, Hailey works hard on her independence. Therapy focuses on physical ways to promote her independence by setting a structure for the week. This structure gives her independence and the ability to follow a schedule. The structure also leads to the initiation of the steps needed to assist in achieving her daily needs with greater independence. In addition, she works on physical tasks to improve core strength and fine motor skills. Her therapists have made these less desirable tasks fun and she has progressed tremendously. (sewing a button, doing a pony tail, organizing her days activities). She has also learned how to add without mistakes! Throughout the week she plans her activities. She lays out her outfits every Sunday on the back of her door for the week.
She can now remove used portions of lunch, replace the dry foods for her lunch the next day. She makes sure she has her plate, napkins, and cutlery. Therapy has made mom very aware of things that Hailey is capable of doing. The therapy has encouraged and empowered mom to let Hailey learn and be independent in her activities of daily living. Mom is now aware of the techniques needed to promote daily success from being an active participant in the therapy process.
Hailey now participates in household tasks such as checking expiration dates on foods and organizing the pantry. According to mom, Bi-County has helped tie in the critical thinking of day to day tasks for Hailey to become more independent.
Fundraising is Hailey’s Jam. She likes to help others and give back to her causes: American Cancer Society, Broward Gold Coast Down Syndrome, and Schott Communities. She attends events, participates in the Down Syndrome walk, sells raffle tickets for different charities, and participates in the Schott Communities Fashion Show. All of these activities help her become more social and outgoing with unfamiliar people. Exposure to the different areas of daily life assists her in social success within the community.
Hailey works hard everyday and has made substantial progress in her therapy goals and her overall independence.

The Sun twin brothers have made great progress throughout their speech teletherapy sessions. When they started treatment they did not show affection to clinician, and only communicated with gestures or crying. They required constant prompts to follow directions, did not label body parts or common objects, and did not make onomatopoeic/ambient sounds. At this moment, both brothers are able to request using ‘more’, label objects and body parts using approximations, can play with farm animals, and transportation vehicles as well as make their sounds. They have also made progress in following simple directions while playing and dancing. Their affection towards clinician has improved 100%. They smile, wave good-bye and send kisses and hugs to Nancy without any prompting at the end of each session. They have mastered most of their goals and are ready to begin new ones. A special thank you to the twins' parents that have shown dedication, and have been willing to help and implement new learning strategies that were demonstrated in therapy to their everyday routine.

Amelia has improved her pragmatic, receptive and expressive skills thanks to her mother's perseverance and tireless help and commitment

Edward's improvement on answering questions, producing 3-5 word sentences grammatically, and intelligibility is the result of his mother's continued support in carryover of therapy.
